Performance
There's tons of potential hidden away within the Mazda CX-50, and much of it can be brought to the surface by utilizing its standard Sport mode. Activate it by toggling a switch to the left of the shifter, then feel the SUV hold the gears of the standard 6-speed automatic transmission slightly longer than usual. That action will make the throttle response of the standard 2.5L 4-cylinder engine feel extra sensitive, honing every bit of the 187 horsepower and 185 lb.-ft. of torque it produces. There’s a lot more potency behind the available 2.5L turbocharged 4-cylinder powertrain, especially if you supply it with 93 octane fuel. Opting for premium gas is a net positive for its performance, giving it a boost of up to 256 horsepower and 320 lb.-ft. of torque.
Off-Roading
Here’s where the 2026 Mazda CX-50 becomes especially interesting, as compact SUVs are seldom able to venture away from straightforward paths. Using the same switch that you utilized to activate Sport mode, you’ll want to instead toggle to its Off-Road setting.
